If This Were Easy…

Reason #17: Because one also shouldn’t wish one had an eating disorder…

Filed under: diet, reason — Easy @ 9:00 am

This is a genuine IM conversation log. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. And the not so innocent.
[15:55] theinnocent: how hard is it to be bulimic?  from the outside, it seems like it’d be easy.
[15:56] easy: Heheh.
[15:57] easy: God knows, I have had those thoughts.
[15:57] theinnocent: thank you! i thought i was the only one.
[15:57] easy: “It’d just be a little vomiting, I mean, really, why not?”
[15:57] theinnocent: i really hate vomiting, though
[15:57] easy: But then I remember that a) I hate vomiting and b) bulimia is an actual, like, disease thingy
[15:57] theinnocent: yes, it’s a very serious disease.
[15:57] easy: and also that its anorexics that are skinny
[15:58] theinnocent: oh, right.  damn.
[15:58] easy: Bulimics don’t lose that much weight, I don’t think
[15:58] theinnocent: cartoon bulimics do.

I’m in no serious danger of developing any kind of eating disorder, but you have to admit that it’s a little bit sick that I think about it ever. It’s one of the reasons I’m aiming for slow, longer term lifestyle changes. I just don’t think another ‘diet’ is going to work for me. At least not until I can mentally redefine diet back to what it’s supposed to mean, instead of what it’s come to mean.

  1. I’m with you 100% there. I haven’t tried that many fad diets, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about trying them. I’ve also wondered about bulimia as well, then I found out that although a lot of bulimics are thin (yes, it does work a lot like anorexia) they also have sever heart burn, do permanent damage to the digestive tract, have burns in their esophagus, sores in their mouth and may not be able to eat anything other than bland flavourless food for the rest of their life because they screw up their digestion so bad. I mean, what point is there to being bulimic if I can’t eat the tasty stuff? (Horrid, aren’t I).

This take it slow and try to change habits seems to be working for me better than any diet. And, it’s tastier than grapefruit every morning (and, I do like grapefruit).

  2. See, now that’s the most convincing reason to not be bulimic ever. The only viable reason to be bulimic is so that I can eat awesome food and not have to deal with the consequences. If I can’t even eat the awesome food, pffft.

  3. I once chewed cake and spit it out in the sink when I was on a diet. I think that was a low point.
