If This Were Easy…

Reason #10: Because this scares the shit out of me…

Filed under: reason — Easy @ 9:00 am

I hate weight loss surgery. This is why I’m having it.

  1. I must profess ignorance about weight loss surgery vs. other ways to lose weight, so forgive me if I sound insensitive: is the surgery that cuts out most of your stomach a cheaper or safer alternative than liposuction if the weight is so hard on one’s organs and joints?

Do people that have the WLS tend to be folks with chronic problems controlling eating, which is why exercising/controlling caloric intake and (if necessary) getting the weight surgically removed isn’t sufficient?

  2. Lipo is a cosmetic procedure, not a weight loss procedure. Doctors won’t suck hundreds of pounds of fat off a person. They just do bits of fat that you can’t diet off like a belly pooch or something. Taking out 6lbs is considered ‘large volume’ in the lipo world. Ideally, I would lose about 200lbs. There’s just no correlation.

People who get WLS do tend to be people who’ve tried many diets over many years and not been successful at them. I think about it every once awhile, and I know a few people who’ve been fairly successful with it. I kind of think this blog represents my last ditch effort. I’m not healthy at the weight I’m at, so if I don’t manage to take a significant amount of weight off this time around, I’ll probably start talking to my doctor about my surgery options.

  3. I was doing some searching and found your blog. I am 7 years post op and have been at goal since I lost it. I immediately was taken off high blood pressure medicine, my cholesterol is perfect, no more sleep apnea and my life has changed in more ways than I can explain here. To say that it saved my life is an understatement. Hope that helps a bit.

  4. Thanks, Yvonne, I appreciate your perspective. I have a friend who had weightloss surgery a few years ago, and he seems really quite happy, as well. There are encouraging success stories out there.

At the same time, I worry about how well it would work for me given how food focused my life and my job are, or whether I’d still overeat and just make myself sick in the process. It’s a tough call.

  5. I just wrote this really long post about my/our relationship with food and how it changes on a thread on Obesity Help so I hope it’s cool to just direct you there and see if anything helps.
